…men var inte rädd! Det är avsiktligt!
 

Att dika ut den Tanzaniska jorden känns ibland, särkilt när det regnat, som att hugga i sten. Men vad som är ännu tyngre är att verkligen hugga i sten. I ett av dikena har ett stort stenblock valt att bosätta sig och på något vis var vi tvungna att få bort det. Precis som i Povel Ramels kokosnötsvisa prövades flera metoder innan vi till slut lyckades.

Först försökte vi helt enkelt hacka sönder det under devisen att “våld löser alla problem”. Stenblocket fick motta ett stort antal sparkar och slag, men bortsett från ett par frigjorda flisor var metoden synnerligen ineffektiv.

Den andra metoden som prövades var att med vinkelslip såga ett antal snitt i stenen för att därefter klyva loss större stycken. På pappret verkade taktiken så bra men trots snitten hände inte mycket. Stenen ryckte bara nonchalant på axlarna.

Två av arbetarna, två bröder, pekade bort mot ett berg vid horisonten och berättade att de där tidigare hade arbetat med att bryta tanzanite, alltså Tanzanias unika blåtonade diamant. Vi funderade på om inte stenen i diket måste vara kusin med tanzaniten, så hård som den är.

Dagen efter de två fruktlösa försöken, när jag på eftermiddagen återvände till byggarbetsplatsen efter ett besök i den närliggande staden, såg jag hur svart rök bolmade från ett av dikena. Först trodde jag att något hade hänt men sedan fick jag förklarat för mig hur man dränkt stenblocket med en slags blandning av diesel och olja och därefter antänt stenen. Tanken var att hettan till slut skulle få stenen att spricka. Halva natten fick stenen brinna och när jag på morgonen återvände till platsen möttes jag av en glädjande syn: stenen var i bitar. Efter eldhärjningen hade det endast krävts ett fåtal stötar med en slägga för att få stenen på fall.

Av denna episod fick vi alltså lära oss att man även utan stora maskiner kan lyckas med mycket på ett bygge. Det enda som krävs är en stor portion idérikedom (och lite diesel).

Utsättningsarbetet är i full gång. De två tanzaniska ingenjörerna leder arbetet med ritningar, måttband och snöre i hand. Noggrant mäts vägglängder ut och alla diagonaler kontrolleras för att få räta vinklar. Vi börjar med byggnadens siluett och tar därefter en del av byggnaden i taget.

Utsättning

Byggnaden kommer passa fint på tomten, lagom nära vägen intill och som en granne till Baobab-huset. Mellan de två byggnaderna kommer barnen få en fin, rymlig lekyta. Trots att väggarna endast markeras ut med linor börjar det bli möjligt att leva sig in i hur det kommer att kännas att gå i barnhemmets korridorer och leka på någon av dess innergårdar.

Så fort en vägg är utsatt börjar utdikningen av grunden för samma vägg. Det krävs drygt en meters djup för att få en bra grund och eftersom jorden är hård är det ett omfattande arbete. “Mimi ni dume”, ungefär “jag är en tjur”, säger en av de grävande killarna skämtsamt och spänner armarna ovanför huvudet. Idag är det molnigt och luften är sval. Bra arbetsväder. Trots det lockar dunken med dricksvatten som står på ett bord bredvid ett av dikena. Från ett annat dike hörs reggaemusik från en mobiltelefon. Den äldre ingenjören, som är i sextioårsåldern, nynnar samtidigt på psalmer med sin djupa basstämma. Nyfikna barn i skoluniform stannar till på vägen intill och betraktar arbetet. Snart är det lunch.

Efter att under några dagar ha installerat oss i Baobabhuset har så bygget av barnhemmet äntligen börjat. Hurra! Byggnadens fotavtryck har markerats ut och utrustade med hacka och spade arbetar just nu 10-15 mycket flitiga lokala arbetare med att förbereda marken för grundläggning. Det är mycket jord som ska grävas bort och nattens regn har gjort jorden mycket tung. Detta verkar dock inte påverka arbetsmoralen hos någon i gänget! Genom en liten högtalare som vi lagt på en sten strömmar tanzanisk gospelmusik ut över fältet. Arbetet med att förbereda marken förväntas ta några dagar. Därefter följer det fortsatta grundläggningsarbetet.

Vädret är lynnigt. Ena stunden svettas vi i solen med spade i hand för att en halvtimme senare ta skydd från ett skyfall under ett träd. Ju mer regn som faller desto tyngre blir arbetet. Baobabhusets vattentankar är trots dagligt duschande, matlagning och diskning nästan fulla vilket visar hur väl principen med ett vatteninsamlande tak fungerar. Med egna solceller och solfångare på taket är huset dessutom självförsörjande av varmvatten och elektricitet.

Två lokala ingenjörer kommer vara engagerade under uppförandet av hela byggnaden och med den yngre av de två har vi gått igenom ritningarna för grunden. Med god kunskap om lokalt byggande vet han hur djupt vi måste gräva i den aktuella jorden för att få en bra grund. Han tycker att ritningarna ser bra ut.

Det är eftermiddag. Med värk i rygg och axlar kan både jag och Björn, när vi granskar varandras blåsor på handflatorna, konstatera att våra händer är mer vana vid att CAD:a än att gräva. Men spadtag för spadtag växer barnhemmet fram!
